Make Your Carpet Last

If you have priced carpet lately, you know that it is quite expensive. To replace the carpet in just 2 rooms would cost you over 1,000 dollars, and that is for a cheap “builders grade” carpet. If you have a home full of carpet, you likely have 5,000 to 10,000 dollars worth of carpet in your home. It is a significant investment.

A well cared for carpet can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on the grade of carpet that you purchase. Sadly, most carpets are replaced years earlier than necessary because of one thing, neglect.

It doesn’t have to be this way and if you want your carpet to go the distance, there are some simple things that you can do. Take a look.

Vacuum Your Carpet

This is the single most important thing that you can do for your carpet to extend its life. The dirt that you track into your home is abrasive and will gradually wear down the fibers of your carpet if not removed.

This will make your carpet look darker and soiled. The reason for this is that carpet fibers are not smooth. They have edges designed to reflect light and hide soil. When these edges are worn down, the carpet reflects less light and it looks darker.

At the minimum, you should thoroughly vacuum your carpet once a week, but more is always better. Also, make the most of your vacuuming by going slowly and hitting the carpet from multiple locations.

Have Regular Professional Cleanings

The next most important thing that you can do for your carpet is to have it cleaned professionally once a year, more if you have pets or kids. Professional cleaning will remove more dry soil than you can get with a vacuum and all of that sticky dirt that vacuuming will not touch.

Professional carpet cleaning is not as expensive as you think and we would love to help you. Whether you need carpet cleaning in Rowlett TX or Plano, we are more than happy to assist you. We also offer affordable prices that are not much more than the cost of cleaning the carpet yourself with a rental, especially when you add in the cost of your time.

Rotate Your Furniture

It is far too common for us to walk into a home where 25 percent of the carpet is worn flat while much of the rest of it is like new. This is because people fail to rotate their furniture on a regular basis.

If your furniture stays in the same place, then the same paths get worn down day after day. By rotating your furniture, you change the flow of traffic through your home and this will spread out the wear.

Try to rotate your carpet once every six months to keep carpet wear balanced.

Use Area Rugs

If you have areas of your home that get excessive wear, use area rugs and runners. These can protect your carpet from accelerated wear.

One word of caution with rugs though, you need to vacuum under the edges and remove them before professional carpet cleaning. If you fail to do this, your carpet will likely develop a line around the rug.
